Research shows the value of Welshness

There is a clear link between what customers think is a high quality product and the Welshness of the product.

Here are the main research findings published by the Welsh Government recently:

  • 85% of shoppers in Wales believe that food and drink produce from Wales is excellent quality
  • 85% think that they taste excellent
  • 78% say that they would always buy Welsh produce if the price was right.
The statistics support the messages that emerged from the Welsh Language Commissioner’s research into customer attitudes to the use of Welsh by supermarkets.

The Commissioner's research showed that people in Wales, Welsh speakers and non-Welsh speakers alike, see the value of using the Welsh language, with 68% saying that they would like to see Welsh being used by supermarkets in Wales, and 83% agreed with the statement that using Welsh showed support to Welsh culture.

The Welsh Language Commissioner, Meri Huws, said:

“In a competitive market it is vital for companies to listen to what customers want and take steps to meet their aspirations. The Welsh language itself is a tool to attract and retain customers, and it is also an effective way to show the Welsh source of a product and the high quality which is linked to that.

"I have a team of officers who work directly with businesses to help them develop and increase the use of Welsh. Advice and resources  by the team are free of charge, and I encourage any business trading in Wales to take the opportunity to see for themselves the benefits of using the language, and contact us."
