Commissioner launches new marketing fund for charities

This week, the Welsh Language Commissioner announced that they will open a new fund offering financial assistance to charities to promote their Welsh language services.

Charities that have prepared their Welsh language development plan and identified their ‘Welsh Offer’ to the public will be able to apply for up to £500 to raise awareness of their Welsh services.

The Commissioner has a dedicated team working with charities and large businesses to encourage and assist them to offer more services through the medium of Welsh. By creating a Welsh language development plan with the Commissioner's Promotion Team, they are creating a simple 'agreement' to provide services in Welsh.

Aled Roberts, Welsh Language Commissioner, said, “We are delighted to be able to offer this assistance in a difficult time for a number of sectors, including charities. There will be an opportunity to apply for assistance once the charity has agreed a Welsh language development plan with us. If they are successful, we will also provide them with practical help and material to market their Welsh language services in a clear and easy way for the public to understand.

“In a time when everything is new and situations are changing daily, being reassured that services are available in your first language is a comfort to everyone, and essential for some.

"We also hope, of course, that this fund will encourage charities that have not yet made a Welsh language development plan to contact us, and ensure that the Welsh language is treated equally within their charity."

WVCA is a body that represents voluntary organisations in Wales. Anna Nicholl WCVA’s Director of Strategy and Sector Development said, “Charities are very eager to do more through the medium of Welsh and we are fortunate in the Welsh Language Commissioner's Promotion Team who offer practical and strategic support to do so.

“But the reality is that many charities are facing difficult times, and money to promote these proposals is limited. We sincerely hope that many will take advantage of this opportunity for financial assistance to ensure that the public is aware of the opportunities that exist to use the Welsh language within their charity. ”

The marketing fund will be announced during a web-based charity networking event held by the Welsh Language Commissioner on Wednesday, 4 November.
