A statement by the Welsh Language Commissioner following the news of the death of Lord Gwilym Prys Davies

"Lord Gwilym Prys Davies readily gave me advice as I prepared to carry out my duties as Welsh Language Commissioner. His thorough understanding of the law was invaluable in my early days in office.
“We will remember him for his commendable record in strengthening the position of the Welsh language in legislation. It was him, more than anyone, who worked tirelessly to ensure that appropriate consideration was given to the language in the Government of Wales Act 2006.  What he secured at that time was a significant step forward in ensuring greater status to the Welsh language, and laid the foundation for confirming this status in due course in the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011.
"My sympathies are with his family and friends."
