Policy and legislation are key to increasing the number of Welsh speakers, especially policy on Welsh medium education. They are also key to ensure that the language is used, for example use of Welsh language services, use of Welsh in the workplace, and its use socially. Because of this, influencing policy is a vital part of the Welsh Language Commissioner’s work.
The Commissioner has powers to undertake or commission research, author and publish reports, make recommendations to Welsh Ministers and present comments or give advice to persons or organizations. The Commissioner uses these powers to try to influence policy, and through this achieve her main aims which are
- in Wales, the Welsh language should be treated no less favourably than the English language
- persons should be able to live their lives through the medium of the Welsh language if they choose to do so.
