The importance of keeping the Welsh brand after Brexit

Using the Welsh language alongside the Red Dragon will help businesses boost sales of products and services in Wales and beyond after Brexit, according to the Welsh Language Commissioner.
Her comments come as she prepares to hold an event in London with businesses leaders headquartered outside Wales. The purpose of the event is to share the business case for using the Welsh language.
According to the Welsh Language Commissioner, Meri Huws: "The Welsh language is a unique selling point for Wales, and increasingly, it is being used to promote Wales on the international stage. When the Welsh football team were competing in the European Championship in 2016, the Welsh language was central to the marketing campaigns of the Welsh Football Association, their sponsors and other businesses who saw the opportunity to use the team’s success to promote their products.
“From our research with Welsh speaking and non-Welsh speaking customers in Wales, we see that they value use of the language. 68% of customers said that they like to see the language being used, and 83% agreed with the statement that using Welsh shows support towards Welsh culture.  Research carried out by the Welsh Government in 2017 also shows that 85% of shoppers in Wales believe that Welsh food and drink produce are of excellent quality."
All kinds of businesses and charities will attend the event in London – from major banks, to high street stores and leading UK charities. Broadcaster and journalist Guto Harri will be guest speaker, and attendees will hear how companies such as Boots and Santander have worked with the Welsh Language Commissioner to increase their use of the language.
ri Huws added: "Further research with business leaders shows that using the Welsh language can lead to economic benefits. 76% agreed that using Welsh attracts customers; 82% agreed that it adds value to a product or service and 84% agreed that it will improve the business brand.”
"If we lose the Welsh - and the Welsh language - brand after Brexit, our businesses will be at a massive loss. My message is this: if a business wants to attract and retain customers and if we want our businesses to succeed on the international stage, then we should do everything we can to encourage them to develop a strong and memorable Welsh brand, and to make the Welsh language visible and central to their business."
The business networking breakfast will be held 08:30 - 10:00 on 27 February in 25 Victoria Street, London.
From 2:30 to 4:30 the same day, the Commissioner and her team will hold an event for officers from the head offices of UK charities working in Wales.
