Standards (general information)

Standards explain how organizations are expected to use the Welsh language in different situations.

The standards can apply duties on organizations in the following areas:

  • Service delivery
  • Policy making
  • Operational
  • Promotion
  • Record keeping
The Commissioner has two specific duties in the process of imposing standards.  Firstly she can undertake a standards investigation to determine whether a specific organization or sector should have to comply with standards and if so, which standards should be specifically applicable to it.

Secondly, the Commissioner may require an organization to comply with one or more of the standards that are specifically applicable to it by way of a compliance notice.

The Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011 makes provision for specifying standards on the Welsh language.

Welsh Ministers can specify standards and make them specifically applicable to organizations. This is done by regulations, which are secondary legislation introduced through the National Assembly for Wales.

Welsh language schemes that have been implemented by public bodies under the Welsh Language Act 1993 will be replaced as the standards are imposed on organizations.
